EMMERDALE viewers have broken out in cheers after Moira Barton attacked a transphobic bigot who insulted her son Matty.

The farmer – who is played by actress Natalie J. Robb in the ITV soap – tried to remain calm as Tara Fitzgibbons, the mother of Matty’s school bully, made a series of insulting comments towards him.

Moira grabbed Tara by the throat for her vile comments

“I don’t want any fights, not to say,” she said to Matty before they walked up to the vile woman.

Tara said: “What a shame it was about Holly, and Adam.

“My heart went out to you when I heard. One mother going through so much. Phillipa keeps me up to date, do you remember her? She was in Hannah’s year. She’s doing a presentation in the gymnasium, I assume Hannah’s been roped in to do something.”

But as Matty himself noted, Phillipa keeping her mother updated meant she was fully aware that he had transitioned and that Matty was who she was talking about.

He told her: “I’m Matty. I thought Phillipa kept you up to date? I’m her son. I spent most of my time in this place being bullied by your darling daughter. So yeah, work that out, like you haven’t already.”

However later Tara returned to have yet another pop and this time Moira had given up on not causing a scene.

She told Matty: “It’s hard to believe you’re Hannah. Everybody said she was a nice quiet girl.

“Oh dear. I don’t have [a problem]. In fact I’m a bit in awe of you really, still ploughing on when you’ve had the worst luck – an addict, a murderer and now a freak.

“It’s no wonder they all turned out so badly with a role model like you.”

However before Tara could finish her vitriol, Moira grabbed her by the throat and told everyone watching how proud she was of all her children and terrified the bigot into backing down.

Viewers couldn’t help but cheer at the scenes, thrilled that Moira had stepped up for her son.
