Mitch (played by Roger Griffiths) has been grieving since the mother of his daughter Bailey Baker (Kara-Leah Fernandes) took her own life on EastEnders last month.

Bailey has been supported by Mitch, Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) and the rest of the Taylor/Baker clan including her older sister Chantelle Atkins (Jessica Plummer) and her husband Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith).

Since arriving on the BBC soap earlier this year, Chantelle has found herself in a feud with Kim Hubbard-Fox (Tameka Empson) whilst Gray has taken a backseat to the drama.

Having recently stood up for himself against gangster Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), Gray could be set to take centre stage in a dark new storyline.

Not much is known about Gray’s family and as is common with soap villains, a mystery surrounding their past is often a trigger for them committing malicious deeds, either under the illusion of doing good or just to be as evil as possible.

Having got underlying tension with his wife’s father, confronting Mitch about their fractured relationship in the future could lead to a devastating chain of events.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk at the British Soap Awards, actor Toby-Alexander hinted there could be an inner-darkness looming within his character.

Toby said of Gray and Mitch’s conflict: “I think as a father, he’s naturally protective over his family and his daughter.

“Likewise with Gray, he’s also aware his father was never there and he’s obviously spoiling his wife.”

The actor added: “There is a kind of father/son-in-law conflict naturally which happens, but we’ll see,” so could this possibly hint towards more than just Gray having a tiff with Mitch?

Aware Bailey needs her father more than ever now, Gray could hope Mitch will be more welcoming to him and accept help from his son-in-law.

However, if Mitch continues to be hostile towards Gray, could the newcomer take matters into his own hands and issue his father-in-law a sinister warning?

Earlier this year, Chantelle tried to make amends with Kim over their feud and seemed to hint not everything was what it seems with her relationship.

Although they appear a happy couple with the picture perfect family, could both Gray and Chantelle be hiding a secret about their relationship which portrays the solicitor as a menacing force?

As a professional trained in the ins and outs of the law, Gray may know the best way to commit his villainous deeds without arousing any suspicion.

If he were to confront Mitch in a threatening way, Gray’s dark secret be in jeopardy as the overprotective father sees another side to his son-in-law.

Viewers will have to wait and see what if anything Gray is hiding, but things are set to get a whole lot more complicated for Chantelle’s brother, Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters).

Having learnt he is expecting a baby with Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper), Keanu will be rocked when he discovers forbidden lover Sharon Mitchell (Letitia Dean) is also pregnant and possibly with his child.

Scenes set to air in the coming weeks will see the young mechanic kidnapped after he tells Sharon he is going to reveal all to Louise as he’s riddled with guilt.

Could this be the final twist in the tale as Phil finally discovers the truth about his wife’s affair and could he seek deadly revenge on Keanu by leaving him in a terrifying predicament?

EastEnders continues Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
