Tottenham full-back Djed Spence took a cheeky dig at Brennan Johnson following England’s emphatic 3-0 triumph over Wales in a friendly at Wembley Stadium. The Three Lions wrapped up the contest within 20 minutes after a scintillating start under Thomas Tuchel’s guidance. Aston Villa pair Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins netted the opening two strikes inside 11 minutes.
Rogers broke the deadlock with a clinical finish, whilst Watkins demonstrated his predatory instincts at the far post to extend the lead. The outcome was sealed when Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka bent home a third for England as Tuchel’s squad prepared for their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Latvia, which could secure their passage to the tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
From a Spurs standpoint, the evening produced contrasting fortunes for their representatives. For Spence, it proved a memorable occasion as he earned his maiden England senior start at Wembley Stadium.
For Johnson, it became an evening he would prefer to erase from memory immediately. Unfortunately for the winger, Spence wasn’t prepared to let him off lightly.
Following the final whistle, the defender posted a ruthless message to his club team-mate whilst celebrating the victory. “Very happy to get my first England start with a great win,” he posted on Instagram.
“But forget about all that emotional stuff for a second. You cannot escape the inevitable. Let’s take a walk to the penitentiary brother.”
The post featured a series of images of Spence in action, including one with Johnson during the match. It also included a doctored image of him walking Johnson on a leash.
Spence is well-known for his social media antics and recently discussed this in an interview with TNT Sports pundit Peter Crouch. When shown some of his recent posts, including references to prison, the defender explained that he creates these posts with players he has a personal rapport with.
Following the 3-0 Carabao Cup triumph over Doncaster Rovers, Spence shared an image of Damola Ajay ‘behind bars’. Ajay is currently on loan at the South Yorkshire club from Spurs, and the Tottenham defender confessed it was merely a jest and not intended to offend.
It’s been a stellar season for Spence at Tottenham. During the September international break, the 25 year old made history as the first Muslim player to represent England.
