Climbing out of the shower or bath and using a soft and fluffy towel is what many people dream of, but they can soon become crusty and scratchy. They tend to lose their softness over time due to detergent residues and body oils which build up in the fabric.
Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Cheryl Curristin wrote: “Just tried the white vinegar extra rinse after washing my towels. I was very skeptical and thought they would stink of vinegar, but it’s the best way to make towels fluffy.
“Two lovely, clean, and fluffy towels are now drying on the line, and they smell amazing.”
White vinegar not only strips any residue and fabric softener left behind, but it also works great at softening towels.
The acetic acid in vinegar dissolves these residues, making the 30p ingredient great for laundry.
Cheryl explained that she left the fabric conditioner out “deliberately” to see if it made a difference.
She added: “It’s so much better, so soft and fluffy, I can’t believe it.
“Definitely will be doing this every time for my towels now. I can’t believe I’ve only just tried this at the age of 64.”
To use white vinegar in your towel wash, add the towels to the drum with a detergent pod.
When the cycle is over, add some white vinegar to the fabric softener drawer and set it off for another rinse.
Jill Adams commented: “Totally agree. Always use white vinegar in my machine instead of conditioner.
“It works great and keeps the machine sparkling clean at the same time, no smell after is a big bonus.”
Luna Glover wrote: “This completely transformed my towels, it’s so cheap too. Would recommend to anyone.”
A bottle of white vinegar can be picked up for as little as 30p in supermarkets such as Tesco.
