Conor Mcgregor In Plea Negotiations After Melee


NEW YORK — Mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor is in plea negotiations to resolve charges stemming from an April backstage melee at a Brooklyn arena.

The 29-year-old Irish fighter and co-defendant Cian Cowley remained free on bail after a brief court appearance Thursday. They are due back in court July 26, and a prosecutor said plea negotiations are ongoing.

“I regret my actions that led to today,” McGregor told reporters after the court appearance. “I understand the seriousness of this matter and I am hopeful this will get worked out.”

McGregor, the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion who hasn’t fought in MMA since winning the 155-pound belt in November 2016, faces three counts of misdemeanor assault?and one count of felony criminal mischief.

Video footage of the incident showed McGregor hurling a hand truck at a bus full of fighters after a UFC 223 news conference at Barclays Center.

Fighters Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg were injured by shattered glass and unable to compete.
