Bakers have been told to add one controversial ingredient into their chocolate cake that will make it taste “so good”. People on the social media platform Reddit shared the odd ingredient that makes the biggest difference in their recipes. One addition to a chocolate cake recipe was weirder than others.
One user suggests adding “a bit of mayonnaise” to chocolate cake, saying that “once you realise that mayo is mostly eggs and oil, it’s not so hard to believe why it tastes so good”. This addition appears to be approved by some food experts too, with Virginia Godd sharing her recipe – also including mayonnaise. She said it was her mum’s recipe , dating back to the Great Depression. Virginia wrote on AllRecipes: “It is so good, it fills your needs and your memories.”
The cake is made using all-purpose flour, baking soda, sugar, cocoa powder, water, baking powder, vanilla extract, and the odd ingredient out – mayonnaise.
Start by preheating your oven 175C and greasing two cake pans. Then, mix the dry ingredients in a bowl before adding in the mayonnaise, water and vanilla until smooth.
Pour the batter into the pans and bake for 30 minutes. Once cool, remove the cakes from the pans and cover them with chocolate frosting.
Bakers love this addition, with one reviewer saying: “Always sinfully delish! This time I used a Bundt pan and drizzled frosting and coconut on it. It didn’t last long.”
Another added: “Everyone loved it. After eating it, I made people guess what the secret ingredient was, and no one could tell it has mayonnaise in it! It is a very dense, filling cake, so you might want to take small slices.”
One baker said: “This is the exact recipe I requested for my mother to make for me every birthday growing up. She has been gone many years, so now I’m making it for my 53rd birthday. Each bite will bring back precious memories of my wonderful mother and all the mayonnaise cakes she made for my birthdays.”
