Carol Vorderman, 58, admits she is criticised for how she dresses but will NEVER change

Carol Vorderman, 58, hits out at ‘ageist’ critique of her outfit choices and says she was branded ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ when she was just 39

Carol Vorderman has revealed she is constantly criticised for the way she dresses and that she has been a victim of ageism for most of her life.

Appearing on This Morning on Monday, the 58-year-old maths whiz said: ‘[I have suffered ageism] most of my life, let’s be fair.

‘Twenty years ago I wore a blue dress to the BAFTAs which was above the knee, I was 39. That became a massive story, programmes were made about it. Not about the dress, it became about should a woman aged 39 wear a dress above the knee?

Hitting back: Carol Vorderman has revealed she is constantly criticised for the way she dresses and that she has been a victim of ageism for most of her life

‘I was called mutton dressed as lamb. Would you call a 39 year-old today mutton dressed as lamb because she wore a dress above the knee? Of course you wouldn’t! That’s just nonsense.’

Carol turned heads in the slinky number when she attended the TV BAFTAs in 2000 in London.

She continued: ‘The point about ageist remarks are that they belong to the last Century. I get it all the time and has my attitude changed whatsoever? No! And is it going to change? No!’

On whether these comments ever sting, Carol revealed: ‘No, never. What is age appropriate? Surely it’s about the spirit of somebody.’

Carol said, of living in an ageist society: ‘I think we’re becoming less so, but I don’t think social media has helped, as we all know, as we all get a bit of the brunt of that. It doesn’t help people who are at the receiving end.’

Despite facing online criticism from trolls, Carol admitted that she doesn’t respond to her haters.

‘I just mute. Lorraine [Kelly] taught me that trick, she said “Don’t block, mute.” And then they carry on doing their thing,’ she said.

Speaking about life in her fifties Carol explained: ‘The best decade. I feel fantastic. Obviously tragedy happens, but that’s life. But I feel freer than ever before.’

On being an inspiration Carol said: 'No. You don’t do it so that you can be an inspiration. That’s not the motivation behind it. I do it because you know I’ve always liked to be healthy'

Carol will soon be turning 60 and commenting on that milestone Carol said: ‘Hopefully [I will] get this flight around the world solo. When mum died, that all happened a few weeks before I was due to take off.

‘But cause as much mischief as possible basically… It’s not about money and it’s not about celebrity.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30AM on ITV.
