Black coffee tastes ‘way smoother’ when pinch of kitchen staple is added

A morning coffee is an essential daily ritual for many, delivering that crucial caffeine kick-start to the day, with a wide range of ways to enjoy it. However, for many, the prospect of black coffee remains daunting.

Its harsh bitterness when consumed without sweeteners or milk can prove rather unpalatable, however it is a relatively healthy choice when consumed in moderation. Luckily, its taste can be dramatically enhanced with merely a dash of one surprising component. This guidance comes from Dr Karan Rajan, who frequently shares tips on transforming ordinary foods into healthier and more appetising options on TikTok, reports the Express.

Amongst his straightforward yet brilliant culinary tricks is incorporating just a tiny amount of salt into your black coffee.

Dr Rajan explained: “The salt blocks the bitterness receptors on your tongue, making the coffee taste way smoother and requiring less sugar.”

Coffee specialists at Espresso Works have agreed, observing that salt not only enhances the nutty characteristics in particular coffee varieties but also intensifies their natural sweetness, producing a less harsh and more balanced taste experience, even without added sugar.

Beyond improving flavour, salt can also boost the aromatic qualities of black coffee.

Health benefits of black coffee

Drinking your coffee black can have a number of important health benefits. One of these is a potentially reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the long-term, according to Healthline.

It may also offer protection against specific neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Black coffee could potentially impact fat storage and boost gut health, both of which may assist in weight management.

It’s also advantageous for cardiovascular health, with research suggesting that drinking three to five cups of coffee daily could reduce the risk of heart disease by 15%.

What is a safe amount of black coffee to consume?

Despite being a relatively healthy option, like everything else, black coffee should be enjoyed in moderation. According to Healthline, healthy adults should try to stick to 400mg of caffeine per day or less. If the only caffeinated drink you have is coffee, that’s about four cups.

Excessive caffeine intake can lead to headaches, insomnia and an increased heart rate, so it’s crucial not to overdo it.
