You can eat apples with one other thing, and they taste 10 times better when you do. I tried this unique combination when I recently attended a food festival where samples were being given out. Apples are a familiar fruit to most Brits, and they are usually just eaten on their own, either by chopping them up into slices or just biting into the fruit. But when you eat them with one added thing, you will have an amazing tasting experience.
I tried apples seasoned with Tajin, and it was a game-changer for me. You might be familiar with Tajin, but you probably don’t realise the number of things you can add it to. Tajin is used for cocktails, a simple salad, and crispy roast potatoes. But one of the best ways to enjoy Tajin is by adding it to fruit. Apples are one of the fruits brilliantly complemented by this Mexican spice blend.
At the National Geographic Traveller Food Festival in London this Saturday, I tried this combination and I was an instant mega-fan. The Tajin adds a beautiful richness to every bite of apple, especially when the fruit is diced up into small chunks rather than slices.
Kay, who is an ambassador for Tajin, took some time to tell me about the spice blend and why it tastes amazing on fruits like apples. “Tajin is a Mexican product made of seven different types of chilli, all prepared with sea salt and lime,” she revealed.
At the samples stand, there was watermelon, pineapple and apple, all covered in this lovely spice blend. The apples called to me and the flavours, including lime and chilli, perfectly combined with the sweetness and subtle bitterness of the apple to create an amazing flavour I had never experienced before.
It is rare that I try something and know that it will instantly become a favourite snack for me. But I ended up walking away with some Tajin to throw on my apples at home.
While apples can simply be chopped up and topped with Tajin, you can also bake them in this spice blend. The uses for Tajin are almost endless, and Kay says that it is a Mexican ingredient that people in the country use for pretty much everything.
Other uses for Tajin include seasoning roast potatoes and garnishing sweet treats such as ice cream and sorbet.
