Aldi Refused To Let Mum, 23, Use Nhs Vouchers To Pay For Baby Milk

SUPERMARKET giant Aldi stopped a mother from using NHS Healthy Start vouchers to purchase baby milk formula.

Mary Crawford, 23, tried to use the vouchers in the Newcastle store to buy two tubs of Mamia first infant formula for her four-month-old son Marshall Holmes.

However when she got to the check-out the vouchers were rejected.

Mary said she was told by Aldi they couldn’t be redeemed for soya-based milk.

When she complained to Aldi HQ the mistake was put down to a till error at its Newcastle and Norton Heights stores.

Aldi has now apologised to Mary for the mix-up.

A spokesperson told the Sun Online: “We have apologised to Ms Crawford. The technical issue with the till has now been resolved.”

The NHS Healthy Start scheme provides one voucher-a-week for eligible women.

Pregnant women who qualify and those with children over one and under four years old can receive one £3.10 voucher per week.

Vouchers can be spent on cows’ milk or infant formula, as well as fruit and vegetables.

They can’t be used for instant formulas that aren’t based on cow’s milk, such as soya formulas and goat’s milk formulas.

Mary told the Stoke Sentinel: “I’m concerned because mothers on these vouchers might not have someone they can fall back on if the vouchers are rejected. Aldi should be accepting them if it sticks to the terms and conditions of the vouchers.

“My son has only ever had that milk. I can’t give him another one because it could cause constipation. It’s made me feel upset and a bit angry. This is my son’s formula. This is what he feeds on and this is messing about with that.

“I hope Aldi can sort this out. If I was solely reliant on the vouchers and couldn’t pay for them out of my own pocket I don’t know how I would be able to feed my baby.”
