World No. 9 Emma Navarro fell victim to a massive upset on day two of the French Open. After reaching the fourth round last year, the American failed to make it out of the gates this time around, going out in round one. Unseeded Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro raced into a 6-0 5-0 lead and served for the double bagel, with commentator Matt Chilton rubbing salt in Navarro’s wounds when he said: “Got the bagel in the first set and now applying smoked salmon and cream cheese to it in the second set.”
But the ninth seed broke to get herself on the board before suffering a 6-0 6-1 defeat – also known as a bagel and a breadstick. They do love a bakery here in Paris. It’s another huge Grand Slam victory for Bouzas Maneiro, who also upset Marketa Vondrousova at Wimbledon last year when the Czech star was the defending champion.
After racing through in just 57 minutes, the Spanish world No. 68 admitted she was just happy to win a match in straight sets.
“Right now I just feel really happy how I played today, how I was handling pressure and nerves for the first round here. Last year was tough for me and I wanted to do my best, and I think I did it, so happy for that,” she said.
“I just think that everything is possible, I try to play my best every match. I have my team here, I knew that I have a lot of support and we prepared as well for the match as we could. Of course I didn’t expect this score, this result! But yeah, I’m happy.
“I have no idea [how I won in 57 minutes]. Really quick, and it’s funny because my team just told me, ‘Is it possible to win a match in two sets?’
“Because the last two were three sets. They said to me, ‘Is that possible?’ I said, ‘I will try to do my best!’ So for you guys, one hour, finally!”
The 22-year-old may have found some inspiration from compatriot Rafael Nadal, after his career and historic 14 titles here were honoured in an emotional ceremony on Sunday. Bouzas Maneiro attended the presentation and had questioned whether it was the right preparation for her match – but she needn’t have worried.
“I was there, I cried a bit! It was so emotional, I had no idea if it was good for me to be there or not because I was a little bit sad,” the Spaniard said.
“But of course he gave all of the best for tennis, Spanish tennis and for the world. For me, it’s my idol, he’s one of the best players in the world. For me, he’s the best so happy for him, and how they prepared everything was so beautiful.”
