Mould is common in bathrooms as it thieves in a warm and wet environment, but it can be incredibly frustrating if spores makes their way into your shower grout. Grout is the lines between tiles and joints that made out of pores material, and these tiny pores can be the perfect environment for mould  to grow.

Once mould gets into grout, it can be incredibly difficult to remove it, but Jared, a cleaning expert from Certified Clean Care has shared you can kill spores by making a paste with baking soda. He said: “Baking soda is a practical product used for cleaning the shower area that’s not as toxic as many commercial cleaners.”

Baking soda can penetrate the pores in grout to reach embedded mould spurs and is abrasive, so that break down the mould without damaging anything in the shower.

It tends to be more effective to mix baking soda with hydrogen peroxide, which has antifungal properties, so can break down spores.

The expert said: “One way to clean and whiten the grout is by use of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Mix the two ingredients to create a thick paste.”

This is the most effective way to remove hard-to-reach mould without using bleach, which many people are wary of in bathrooms due to the risk of inhaling toxic fumes in such an enclosed space.

How to remove shower grout mould without bleach

You will need:

  • Baking soda
  • hydrogen peroxide (three percent solution)
  • Old toothbrush

Instructions

All you need to do is put on a pair of gloves, then mix 120g of baking soda with around two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide until it forms a thick paste.

Apply the paste directly into the mouldy grout lines, then let it sit for 10 minutes to give the cleaning solution time to break down the mould.

After the time is up, scrub the grout with an old toothbrush and the mould should come away easily.

Rinse the area with warm water and then dry properly with a clean cloth. Your shower should be sparkling clean and mould-free without too much effort.

In the future, open a window or turn on an exhaust fan after having a shower to reduce the amount of humidity in a bathroom.
