I tried the Whispering Angel dupe – I’m convinced it’s better

Sipping on a glass of cold blush rosé with a rare glimpse of sun might just be one of the highlights of a British Summer. But the fruity citrus palate of Whispering Angel, the favourite among A-list celebs, comes with a hefty price tag to match.

So after reading reviews online about Asda’s dupe, I decided the £12.97 bottle compared to the £22 for Whispering Angel was worth a go. In a review on the supermarket’s website, titled “please don’t buy this wine”, one enthusiast wrote: “I’m not sure I want to write this review as everyone will want this. It’s FABULOUS I’m definitely saving myself £12 a bottle now a convert please don’t buy it because I don’t want it to run out.”

Asda’s dupe, which wins points on its name alone, is also a Provençal rosé, although it promises a slightly different flavour profile to Whispering Angel’s citrus and floral notes.

The cheekily named Screaming Devil Côtes de Provence has aromas of peach, mango, passion fruit and rhubarb according to Asda, which creates a “really lively vibrant palate”.

However, the floral Whispering Angel rosé has a “long, smooth finish” instead, according to Majestic Wines, with notes of “apple, pink grapefruit, peach and cream”.

Upon the first sip, I understood what some reviews had said, that it is not a complete dupe because the flavour profile is slightly different.

One reviewer commented: “A nice rose, it has been likened to Whispering Angel- it’s not but not as nice. Can’t complain for the price.”

But, and this is a big but, I thought Asda’s version is the type you could keep on sipping for the whole evening.

It’s light, crisp and refreshing, easy on the palate, and not too dry – a perfect partner for a hot Summer’s day.

One review that really encouraged me to try it said: “So as an avid drinker of Whispering Angel, I heard about this wine and thought. Let’s give it a go. It’s actually better than Whispering Angel at £21 and at £13 per bottle. You won’t be disappointed.”

I have to admit I’m convinced. Even though it doesn’t taste the same, I think it’s better for one reason.

Everybody enjoys feeling as if they’re getting something luxurious for less than they should, and this wine delivers on that — just look at the minimalist bottle for reference. Plus it’s fresh, light, and delicious: everything you need in a summer rosé.
