Homeowners urged to do one thing to keep their house smelling fresh

It can sometimes be tricky to get rid of lingering smells from inside our homes. While there are a number of artificial fragrances out there, social media users have instead advised homeowners to use a free and natural method.

The advice was issued on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips group on Facebook. The page has over 500,000 followers and users agreed that one quick and simple method was the most effective in keeping houses smelling fresh.

Amber Wallace posted in the group: “The best thing to use for your house to smell fresh?” Her question has attracted around 340 replies, with a number of people recommending different solutions.

Although some people recommended wax burners and plug-in scents, the comments with the most likes included a simple and free tip. They agreed that opening windows was the best way to remove bad smells from houses.

Chris Walmsley said: “Seriously…open the windows! I hate these wax burners and plug ins. Nothing like fresh air.” Suzy Rowlands agreed: “Exactly, why would you want your home to smell artificial, when you can have clean fresh air coming in free of charge!”

Kelly Leadbitter added: “Windows open if you can does help.” Lindsay Lile wrote: “Open windows and take rubbish out daily.”

Caz Marie commented: “Open windows over night. I normally leave my bathroom and spare bedroom at the back open.”

Jane Urquhart said: “Open windows as much as possible.” Mandy Heward put: “Open windows and let fresh free air in even in winter.”

As well as opening windows, you can also ventilate your house by opening doors. This helps air to circulate rather than lingering in one area.

It’s recommended to open windows and doors after specific activities such as cooking or showering. Extractor fans can also be used in kitchens and bathrooms to remove bad smells.
