Urgent recall issued for popular supermarket food – ‘do not eat’

A food recall notice has been issued for packs of beef lasagne over a packaging error which means they may contain seafood. Customers were warned that some packs of La Famiglia Rana Slow-Cooked Braised Beef Lasagne may contain prawns and lobster which are not mentioned in the ingredients list.

This means the meal could pose “a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to crustaceans”. A notice issued by the Food Standards Agency said: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to crustaceans, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund (even without a receipt).”

The recall applies to 700g packs made by Giovanni Rana (UK) Ltd, which are sold at stores including Tesco and Morrisons.

They have the batch code L0B510816 and a use by date of June 17, 2025.

Crustaceans are invertebrates with a segmented body and jointed legs, such as crabs, crayfish, langoustine and lobster. They are one category of shellfish.

Fish and shellfish make up three out of 14 food allergens regulated by the Food Standards Agency, according to Allergy UK.

Allergic reactions to crustaceans are caused by an abnormal reaction of the immune system to some proteins found in the marine animals.

Some people with crustacean allergies react to all shellfish, while others are sensitive only to certain kinds.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction include a rash or hives, dizziness, swelling of the mouth, tongue, face or other region, difficulty breathing and abdominal pain.

A more severe reaction, anaphylaxis, can cause swelling of the throat, shock, a rapid pulse and loss of consciousness.
