It can be frustrating to deep clean your home, only to find it dusty again just days later, but there is an easy way to prevent debris from settling on the floors or walls. Wooden floors and skirting boards tend to be the dustiest places in a home as they are low to the ground and can accumulate static electricity more easily than other surfaces.

Dust is constantly circulating in the air, but as it settles static electricity can attract it to wooden surfaces, causing dirt, hair, and other debris to build up quickly. Trying to get rid of dust can be frustrating, especially in spring as it is peak pollen season, but the cleaning experts at Molly Maid have shared that dryer sheets can keep dust away.

The expert said: “It leaves behind a trace of anti-static residue for a fresh scent and effective dust repellent. This cleaning method is even effective with used dryer sheets, so there’s absolutely no waste.”

Dryer sheets reduce the static electricity build up on a surface to neutalise it so dust will not be able to cling to skirting boards or floors.

It also leaves behind a light wax coating that creates a protective barrier so dust, as well as other debris, will not be able to stick to the surface.

Not only are dryer sheets fantastic at dust prevention but they also slighly polish the surface so your home will look cleaner without much effort.

How to use dryer sheets to repel dust

To begin, vacuum your wooden floors and at the edges of skirting boards like your normally would.

Then, simply take a dryer sheet and gently wipe it on your skirting boards. If possible, attach a dryer sheet to a microfiber mop to clean your wooden floor, or you can also do it by hand.

Not only will this get stop dust sticking on the wooden surface but it will reduce the build up of other common debris you get on floors.

The expert said: “When your Swiffer cloths run out, try using dryer sheets in their place. You’ll be amazed at how well they pick up dirt, dust, and hair.”

Make sure to buy dryer sheets with anti-static properties before trying this cleaning method. You can also look for sheets with a pleasant scent to help your home smell fresher.

Dryer sheets should keep a room dust free for about a week but it depends on the amount of pollen outside and how much foot traffic a area gets.

The best way to repel dust is to incorporate dryer sheets into your regular cleaning routine. Run the sheets across wooden surfaces at least once a week to keep your floors and skirting boards clean.
