However, if you water your garden in the evening, this isn’t necessarily wrong either. In fact, it often means less water is lost to evaporation thanks to generally cooler conditions. Depending on the plants you have will also change how much you need to water them.
Yellowing leaves might be a sign you’re overwatering a plant, and excess watering can even lead to root rot and plant death. On the other hand, underwatering usually results in dried-out soil, making it harder for plants to get essential nutrients.
Many people use a hosepipe to water their gardens, but it can be hard to gauge how much water each plant is getting with a sprinkle. Now, a garden expert has shared how you should use a hosepipe to water your plants.
In a video posted on TikTok, @themediterraneangardener shared the watering techniques you probably hadn’t heard of, and how each should be used in the garden. Hosepipes come with a number of different detachable spray nozzles, but how often do we switch these out?
In the video, Michael, who runs the account @themediterraneangardener, shows a selection of spray nozzles and explains that they all have “different settings which do different things”.
While the comb setting and fine rose nozzle should be used for more gentle watering, perfect for succulents and herbaceous perennials like lavender, the jet should be used for cleaning your garden.
When it comes to caring for seedlings, the fine mist will ensure they get sufficient water, and the fast and flat fill should be used to fill buckets or watering cans for jobs around the car and to rinse soap off a car.
Using the correct nozzle for each job prevents damage to plants and measures their water consumption.
