As May unfolds, gardeners across the UK are embracing the joys of planting summer displays, as well as enjoying the warmer weather. However, with unpredictable weather patterns and the lingering threat of late frosts, it’s crucial to take precautions to ensure your hanging baskets thrive.

Experts from gardenersworld.com have advised gardeners to put up their hanging baskets now – but to keep them sheltered in a greenhouse or on a porch for the next few weeks.

Many popular bedding plants used in hanging baskets are tender and sensitive to cold temperatures, and exposing them to late spring frosts can damage or even kill them. Therefore, it’s recommended to wait until late May or early June before placing your hanging baskets outside.

1. Plant up indoors: Begin by planting your hanging baskets in a sheltered indoor area, such as a greenhouse, porch, or conservatory. This provides a controlled environment where plants can establish roots without the immediate threat of frost.

2. Harden off gradually: Before moving your baskets outdoors, it’s essential to harden off the plants. This involves gradually acclimating them to outdoor conditions by placing them outside for short periods each day, increasing the duration over a week. This process helps reduce transplant shock and prepares plants for the harsher outdoor environment.

3. Monitor weather forecasts: Keep an eye on local weather forecasts. If a late frost is predicted, ensure your baskets are brought back indoors or covered with fleece to protect them. Having fleece covers handy can be a lifesaver during unexpected cold snaps.

4. Choose the right location: Once the risk of frost has passed, place your hanging baskets in their final outdoor positions. Opt for a sunny spot, preferably south-facing, to ensure the plants receive adequate sunlight. Turn the baskets regularly to promote even growth and prevent them from leaning towards the light.

5. Regular maintenance: Water your hanging baskets thoroughly, ensuring the compost remains moist but not waterlogged. Regular feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser will encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Additionally, remove any dead or faded flowers to promote new growth and prolong the blooming period.

By taking these protective measures, you can enjoy a stunning display of hanging baskets throughout the summer months. Remember, patience and preparation are key to successful gardening.

So, plant up now, shelter your baskets, and look forward to a vibrant and flourishing garden as the season progresses.
