Lettuce is crisp, refreshing, and the perfect base for so many delicious meals – from fresh salads to sandwiches. But as lovely as lettuce is, it has one big downside: it doesn’t last long – and keeping it fresh can feel like a race against time. One minute, it’s crispy and green; the next, it’s wilted and brown in the back of the fridge.

If you’ve ever found yourself tossing out soggy lettuce, you’re not alone. Fortunately, Wheeldon Brothers have offered people a simple storage hack that can help keep your lettuce fresh and green for up to a month longer.

“Wrapping freshly bought lettuce in tin foil before placing it in the fridge can extend its shelf life significantly—up to 30 days,” say the waste experts.

“This clever trick helps to regulate moisture and airflow, preventing those pesky brown spots that often plague salad greens.”

It’s important to note that while eating slightly soggy lettuce is generally not dangerous, excessive slime can indicate bacterial growth and potential health risks.

Proper storage techniques can also enhance the longevity of other vegetables. “For instance, spring onions and asparagus thrive when stored in a glass with a little water and loosely covered with a plastic bag, lasting up to two weeks,” the experts advise.

When it comes to cucumbers, steer clear of the fridge. “Instead, store them in a plastic bag with holes for ventilation, and place them in a cool spot in your kitchen to maintain their crispness,” they recommend.

Tomatoes and potatoes fare better outside the fridge as well. “Keeping them at room temperature helps preserve their flavour and texture,” the experts add.

For herbs, a handy trick is to wet a paper towel, roll your herbs in it, and then store them in a zip-lock bag in the fridge. “This keeps them fresh and vibrant,” they suggest.

Lastly, bananas should be kept separate from other fruits, and wrapping their stems in cling film can prolong their freshness. “Be mindful of storing pears, apples, and kiwis together, as they release ethylene gas, which can accelerate ripening,” they caution.

With these clever storage hacks, you can reduce food waste and enjoy fresh, vibrant produce for longer.
