The 95p food sauce that can keep tables clean and save you hundreds | UK | News

We’re into the spring cleaning season and people across the UK will be on the look out for the cheapest methods to spruce up their homes.

While there are obvious and common methods like hoovering or dusting, homeowners should also look in their food cupboards for some effective tools to help tidy. Experts suggest that some of the best products to clean your house with are hiding in your kitchen cabinets. As well as being effective at cleaning, they are super affordable and convenient to use. These products will not only help freshen up your home this spring but also work out cheaper in the long run.

One of the unusual items they recommend using is mayonnaise. You can pick up Bramwells Squeezt Real Mayonnaise for as little as 95p from Aldi.

The sauce, which is a staple in most home kitchens, is a great alternative to special polish or stain remover. A dab of mayonnaise can clean water rings from wooden furniture, including tables, desks and nightstands.

Karina Toner, operations manager at Spekless Cleaning, said: “Using mayonnaise prevents the need for refinishing or replacing wood furniture, which can cost hundreds. Mayonnaise’s oil content rehydrates the wood, helping to lift the trapped moisture from the stain.

“Simply apply a small amount of mayonnaise onto the water ring, let it sit for 30-60 minutes, or overnight for deeper stains, then wipe off the excess with a clean microfiber cloth. This method works on dining tables, coffee tables, nightstands, and wooden desks.”

It works because the oil in mayonnaise displaces the moisture in the wood, helping to lift the stain. The sauce can also be used to remove sticky residue from labels or tape.

Karina also recommends using distilled white vinegar to clean your home this spring. It is far cheaper than branded sprays and helps to cut through grease and remove hard stains.

She said: “Cleaning with vinegar is a game-changer. It contains acetic acid, which breaks down grease, grime, and mineral buildup. It also dissolves hard water stains and neutralizes odors.”
