Bad Sisters’ star and creator Sharon Horgan has spilled the beans on an amusing encounter with royalty during the filming of the show’s second season, revealing that the cast met Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, while in full fancy dress.
The darkly comedic series, which saw Grace (played by Anne-Marie Duff) end her torment by killing her abusive husband John Paul (Claes Bang) in the first season finale, follows her and her sisters Eva (Horgan), Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene), and Becka (Eve Hewson) as they scramble to keep their deadly secret under wraps.
Two years later, Grace’s newfound joy with a new beau is threatened when Roger Muldoon (Michael Smiley) decides to invite his nosy sister Angelica (Fiona Shaw) over, potentially unearthing the sisters’ dark past.
With the first 10-part season captivating audiences on Apple TV+, Horgan confessed that the team felt the “pressure” to live up to expectations with the sequel.
Despite the stakes, the cast enjoyed their share of fun on set, as evidenced by Prince Edward’s timely visit, reports the Mirror.
“There’s a scene in episode five that I can’t give anything away but we do a little karaoke,” Horgan teased at the Bad Sister’s season two preview event in London.
On the day of the Royal visit, the cast was shooting this particular scene, decked out in whimsical costumes. “We were filming that scene, we were in fancy dress. Sarah’s dressed as a banana, I was… what was I, a lion?” Horgan recalled, with another actor chiming in about her “vampy vampire” outfit.
“Anyway, we looked ridiculous,” Horgan admitted with a laugh. “But that day Prince Edward was being given a tour of the studios where we were shooting and wanted to meet us.”
Unfortunately, the stars weren’t exactly decked out in the formal gear that usually befits a Royal visit and had to make do with their costumes for the day.
“So, we all went out there in our banana suits and watched while he pretended to know who we were,” Horgan said.
She added another amusing detail: “We were also singing the Irish anthem! And then we found out he was outside and we all had our mics on, so we couldn’t walk that back.”
Horgan’s co-star Hewson commented: “It was like when the Spice Girls met Prince Charles… or is he the King?” To which Horgan confirmed, “Yes King, King Charles.”
“It was like that,” Hewson continued. “We were very cheeky and he was very embarrassed.”
The acclaimed Irish drama made a comeback today (Wednesday, November 13) with a two-part season two opener.
With numerous shocking twists and dark comedy expected, fans are left wondering if the Garvey sisters’ new adventures will surpass the thrilling heights reached in the first season.
Bad Sisters season two continues Wednesdays on Apple TV+.
