Critics have been left divided over Disney’s latest film release.
A musical take on the animated classic Snow White was released in cinemas this week, sparking disagreements among film lovers.
Some diehard Disney buffs are less than impressed by the new release, while others are excited to catch the film for themselves.
With Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot starring, the reworked fairy tale didn’t hit high notes as it received a dismal 1.7/10 rating on IMDb at the time of writing, as well as an unflattering 44% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Some viewers believe the 1937 original was better than the cinematic release. One discontented fan took to X, writing: “Please let Snow White be the film that kills off future live action Disney remakes.”
Film critic Jenny Nicholson gave her take, writing: “The new Snow White probably isn’t going to be good but I think it’s cool that they replaced the songs with worse songs.
“Like yeah do something different even if it’s worse. I’ll take that over the Disney renaissance ones they’ve been doing where it’s all the same and still bad.”
Another film-goer added: “Was fully deceived by a couple of people who told me snow white was kinda good and it ended up being the worst movie i’ve seen in years..”
Critics may have panned Disney’s latest ‘Snow White’ film, but some fans leapt to the support of Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. One fan wrote: “Hot Take: Neither Gal Gadot nor Rachel Zegler are the reason Snow White failed.
“The Disney remake trend is years stale at this point, it was written with zero imagination or innovation, it was directed with all the verve of soggy cardboard, and there was nothing to recommend it.”
Another added: “People are blaming the actors and their politics for Disney’s Snow White bombing at the box office but I don’t see anyone mentioning that Snow White is a boring, outdated story and everyone is sick of Disney’s live action remakes… and I think that’s the bigger reason it’s bombing.”
However, not every commentary blasted the new feature. One admirer added: “Despite the repulsive CGI Seven Dwarfs, the new ‘Snow White’ is the best live action Disney remake in a decade.”
Offering praise for Zegler, they noted: “A low bar, but it mostly works-in part because it’s an actual adaptation, rather than mere nostalgic mimicry. Also, Rachel Zegler is a star.”
In the midst of varying opinions, some fans reminisced about the earlier ‘Snow White’ rendition with Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, deeming it a better version of the fairytale.
A disappointed fan expressed their views on the new adaptation, saying: “Snow White and the Huntsman was worlds more entertaining I am so sorry to say. Gal and the CGI dwarfs really dragged Disney’s Snow White down for me.”
The film made headlines prior to its release due to the decision to use computer-generated imagery for the Seven Dwarves instead of human actors.
This decision by Disney, aimed at “avoid reinforcing stereotypes” came under scrutiny after actor Peter Dinklage criticised the Snow White remake, including the portrayal of the dwarves as “f**king backwards”.
Lead actress Rachel Zegler found herself embroiled in controversy ahead of the film’s premiere when she tweeted her hope that Trump voters in the 2024 election “never know peace.”
Zegler subsequently issued an apology for her words, stating: “Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding, and I am sorry I contributed to the negative discourse.”
