Growing orchids can be a challenge – but a surprising household item might be the key to keeping them vibrant for longer. If you’ve struggled to keep your orchids blooming experts suggest one kitchen discard. This byproduct could be a game-changer for your plants.

According to Home & Gardens, orchid enthusiasts are turning to rice water as a natural fertiliser, thanks to its nutrient-rich composition. “Rice water contains starches that can provide energy to orchids. The water also contains vitamin B, which will be released into the soil when you use it,” explained Julie Bawden-Davis, an indoor plant expert at Healthy Houseplants.

The benefits of rice water don’t stop at providing nutrients. “Rice water will also build up beneficial bacteria in the soil, leading to a healthier root system,” Bawden-Davis added.

This means orchids can develop stronger roots, making them more resilient and better equipped to thrive.

Tammy Sons, a horticulturist and CEO of TN Nurseries, said that rice water may even encourage orchids to rebloom. “Rice water can help orchid plants grow more shoots,” she said, making it a simple yet effective solution for reviving struggling orchids.

Using rice water for your orchids is easy, but experts caution against overdoing it. If you’ve cooked rice, you can simply save the leftover water after it cools. Alternatively, soak one cup of rice in three cups of water overnight, then strain the liquid.

Virginia Hayes, an orchid expert at Westerlay Orchids, advises diluting the rice water before use. “I would do one part water, one part rice water,” she recommended.

Without dilution, the starch can cause the top layer of the soil to harden, which may negatively impact your plant.

However, while rice water can be a great addition to your orchid care routine, it shouldn’t replace regular fertilizing or watering. “Using rice water on orchids is no replacement for proper fertilizing or watering,” warned Bawden-Davis.

“I wouldn’t use rice water more than once every two months.”

Applying rice water too often can cause excess starch buildup, which can lead to poor drainage and even root rot. To avoid this, experts suggest using it sparingly, just enough to give your orchids an occasional nutrient boost.

If your orchids need some extra care, this easy, budget-friendly trick might be worth trying. With the right balance, rice water could be the secret to keeping your orchids blooming longer and looking healthier than ever.
