If the water pressure in the shower is weak and spluttering, then you likely have a clogged showerhead, but it is very easy to fix. Many people do not realise that a showerhead needs to be cleaned like any other part of the bathroom, as limescale can quickly block the shower nozzles.

Limescale is mineral deposits like calcium or magnesium left behind when water evaporates. If left untreated, limescale forms a hard crusty layer that attracts bacteria. However, an expert from Showery shared that cleaning a showerhead is simple but highly recommends staying away from common cleaners like white vinegar.

They said: “Keeping your shower head clean is essential for maintaining a refreshing and enjoyable shower experience. While vinegar is a popular cleaning solution, there are other effective methods to clean your shower head without using vinegar.”

White vinegar is one of the best natural solutions for removing limescale. It contains acetic acid, which can quickly dissolve limescale.

However, white vinegar acidity can cause the casing around a showerhead to lose its shine and even damage it if left too long, which is why it is better to use an alternative method like lemon juice.

The expert said: “Lemon juice is another excellent natural cleaner. Its acidic properties help break down mineral deposits and leave a fresh scent.”

Lemon juice contains citric acid, which can break down limescale. It is also much milder than white vinegar, so it is unlikely to harm common shower materials like stainless steel, brass, or chrome.

It is a safe and gentle cleaner that will quickly get rid of limescale and is known to have antibacterial properties, so it will also help banish any other grime lurking in your showerhead.

How to clean a showerhead with lemon juice

You can do this by filling a plastic bag or sandwich bag halfway with lemon juice and sticking the showerhead in the bag.

Most showerheads can be unscrewed from the shower, but if you are weary of trying to remove it, simply secure the bag with rubber bands to submerge it.

Leave the showerhead soaking in the lemon juice for 30 minutes to an hour, as it gives the solution time to break down the limescale minerals.

Once the time is up, remove the showerhead from the lemon juice. Rinse it thoroughly with warm water and then wipe it with a soft, damp cloth to remove any leftover limescale residue.

Your showerhead should now be completely clean, so you can enjoy a comfortable shower without worrying about limescale or grime building up in the nozzles.
