Aside from The Beatles, Queen are the most successful band in the history of the world.
Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon all contributed to the band’s hit back catalogue as incredibly talented musicians and it wasn’t long before they had a joint four-way Queen credit.
Yet despite writing tracks from We Will Rock You to Radio Ga Ga, Sir Brian and Roger have confessed in a new interview how they struggled with serious doubts when bringing their new material to the rest of the band.
Speaking with MOJO, the guitarist said: “Every time I brought a new song to the boys I’d be as nervous as hell, thinking, They’re gonna say it’s rubbish, they’re gonna hate it… I’d always be embarrassed and apologising. That never ever went away.”
Roger added that he “always” felt the same and revealed how Freddie rejected the other three in their assertion of who he was to them.
The drummer added: “I used to make a little demo and see how that went down,” laughs the drummer. “It’s true that Brian and I had an advantage over John because we could sing, but Freddie was an enormous help to John in his writing — and to all of us, actually. We’d say, ‘You’re the leader,’ and he’d say, ‘No, no — I’m the singer.’”
