Meghan Markle was slammed for “choosing Netflix” over the Commonwealth by the late Princess Diana’s biographer, Tina Brown, who pointed out exactly the moment it all went wrong for the Sussexes just days after the duchess’s lifestyle series’ launch. The Duchess of Sussex, who stepped down as a senior working royal in 2020, released her new show, With Love, Meghan, last week, but it has been met with mixed reactions from fans and mostly negative reviews from critics.
With Love, Meghan is the Sussexes’s fifth project for the streaming giant, after they snatched up a reported £80million deal when quit the Firm. Now, Ms Brown, who wrote The Diana Chronicles and was previously critical of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, blasted the duchess and dubbed her “naive” for choosing Netflix over the monarchy when she left the firm. Writing in her newsletter Fresh Hell, she said: “All Meghan had to do was shut up and wait.
“Go quiet for a couple of years, start a family, keep her eyes trained on the splendid royal real estate that would soon come up for grabs…
“The moment William ascended to his role as Prince of Wales, there would have been new global gigs and red carpet roll-outs raining down on the Sussexes’ heads. But no.
“Offered the Commonwealth or Netflix, the Sussexes, with naïve avarice, chose Netflix.”
Elsewhere, Ms Brown was critical of the duchess’s new show, saying that it promotes “fake perfection”.
She explained: “Meghan has come out with a show about fake perfection just when the zeitgeist has turned raucously against it.
“Trump’s America is a foulmouthed and dishevelled cultural place where podcasters in sweaty T-shirts, crotch-rot jeans, and headphones achieve world domination on YouTube.
Meghan announced that her show has been renewed for a second season less than a week after its debut.
Netflix said that it will air in the autumn and has already finished filming.
