Bombshell poll show stark divide between UK and US after Trump’s ‘dictator’ remark | UK | News

Less than half of Brits would call the United States an ally, with more than half viewing Donald Trump as a “dictator”, polling has suggested. The research carried out by More in Common on 7,000 people this month comes as Ukrainian and American officials are due to meet in Saudi Arabia for talks. President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mr Trump had a blazing row in the Oval Office last month after the US President called his Ukrainian counterpart a “dictator”.

Those surveyed for the poll also believe that Vladimir Putin will not stop at Ukraine after his full-scale invasion began in February 2022. “Clear majorities do not think Russia will stop at Ukraine,” More in Common’s UK Director Luke Tryl said on X. “Starmer’s approach popular at home and abroad, less than 50% of Brits now call the US an ally, Europeans ready to go it alone, but only in UK do majority back sending peacekeepers.”

The research also concluded that 56% of Britons think that Donald Trump is a “dictator”, and 30% do not. By comparison, only 13% think Zelensky is a dictator, results suggest.

“Meanwhile Trump gets poor marks for his handling of the conflict among the British public,” Mr Tryl added.

He also noted that “the British public’s perception of the special relationship is under strain”.

“While 70% of Brits say France is an ally of the UK, now fewer than half say that the United States is an ally of the UK,” the polling boss said.

“In Germany just 23% say the US is an ally and only 24% of the French.”

Although, Britons are “more likely than not to want the state visit from Trump to go ahead”.

This includes majorities of Conservative, Labour and Reform voters in favour.

In addition, European citizens are fearful of further conflict. Mr Tryl said: “Finally 68% of Brits and Poles, 64% of Americans, 60% of the French and 53% of Germans think Russia will not stop at Ukraine and majorities in all those countries are worried about the prospect of European war in the coming years.”
