England cricket star faces two-year IPL ban and releases lengthy statement | Cricket | Sport

Harry Brook could face sanctions after pulling out of the IPL. After returning home from England’s dismal ICC Champions Trophy campaign, the 26-year-old has confirmed he won’t be playing in the competition despite having initially committed to the Delhi Capitals.

Brook’s form came under scrutiny in Pakistan, having also struggled on the white ball tour of India in January and February. He’s now released a statment explaining why he won’t be involved in the sport’s leading franchise T20 competition.

“I have made the very difficult decision to pull out of the upcoming IPL,” he wrote. “I apologise unreservedly to the Delhi Capitals and their supporters. I love cricket.

“Ever since I was a young boy I have dreamt of playing for my country and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level. With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision.”

England play a one-off Test against Zimbabwe in May, before ODI and T20 series against the West Indies. That is followed by a huge home Test series with India, which will serve as crucial preparation before the Ashes trip to Australia later this year.

And Brook added the international schedule had impacted his decision. “Ever since I was a young boy I have dreamt of playing for my country and I am extremely thankful to have the opportunity to play the game I love at this level,” he added.

“With the guidance of people I trust, I have taken the time to seriously consider this decision. It is a really important time for English cricket and I want to fully commit to preparing for the upcoming series. In order to do this, I need time to recharge after the busiest period of my career to date.

“I know not everyone will understand, and I don’t expect them to, but I have to do what I believe is right, and playing for my country remains my priority and focus. I remain hugely grateful for the opportunities I have been given and the support I receive.”

However, Brook could now face a two-year ban from the IPL. A new rule brought for this year’s tournament means players who pull out after being selected are banned for two seasons, with exemptions only allowed for “injury or medical condition.”
