The continent of Africa holds many marvels thanks to its abundant landscape and diverse history.
The movement of goods, people, and ideas across the continent has shaped Africa’s cultural landscape. The continent’s ancient civilizations also built a number of incredible tombs for royalty and other wealthy figures.
As such, one African country holds an impressive collection ancient pyramids.
While many link Egypt to the pyramids, Sudan is the African country home to the largest number of pyramids.
This is partly because the realm of the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt had reached far south, even as far south as Sudan.
The Sudanese pyramids differ in build and stature compared to the Egyptian pyramids, and are also older.
For comparison, there are roughly 200 pyramids in Egypt compared to Sudan, which has about 2000 Kushite pyramids.
The pyramids themself are built from sandstone and granite with decorative elements featured taking homage from the cultures of Pharaonic Egypt, Rome and Greece.
The history of pyramids in Sudan comes down to the Nubians, who had built these structures as tombs.
The Nubians built these pyramids to help defend themselves against a high priest and are located in the north of Sudan also known as Nubia.
Nubian pyramids were constructed at three Sudanese sites to serve as tombs for the kings and queens of Napata and Meroë.
The Pyramids of Meroë are one of the most extensive of all the Nubian pyramids in the area which are Nubian pyramids, encompassing three cemeteries near the ancient city of Meroë.
Visitors to these pyramids will no doubt be astounded by the tomb walls, which depict mummified royals with an array of ancient artefacts including jewellery, wooden caskets, bows, horse harnesses, pottery.
Today, these pyramids attract a host of visitors to the African country, becoming a huge attraction with around 15,000 tourists each year.
“One of my favourite moments of our entire trip was watching the sun set over the beautiful desert sands at the Pyramids of Meroë, ” wrote one review on Tripadvisor.
“This was quite possibly one of the most astonishing sunrises I’ve seen. Loved it so much that we came back a 2nd time for sunrise the next day.”
Another added: “This site is fabulous. We were the only tourists there when we visited so it was wonderful having the place to explore.”
