London’s iconic red double-decker buses are known for their classic charm, but one particular bus took luxury to the next level by offering an ‘all first class’ experience.
Passengers embarking from Charing Cross to The London Eye were treated to a lavish journey complete with complimentary champagne, soft drinks, and gourmet canapes.
The bus was decked out with a red carpet entrance, plush red velvet cushions, and bespoke headrest covers, ensuring a commute that passengers wouldn’t soon forget.
Gastronomic delights on the menu included bite-sized beef Yorkshire puddings, goat’s cheese and tomato shells, vegan cauliflower pakoras, and the Portuguese favourite, pastel de natas.
Travellers enjoyed a scenic route featuring views of Big Ben, the London Eye, the River Thames, and the Southbank.
Jan Marshall, 79, from Tunbridge Wells, who had the pleasure of boarding the bus, exclaimed: “What a marvellous way to start the day; 10 out of 10,” adding, “It was a wonderful and unexpected experience – the best sort you can have.”
This unique service was offered by Virgin Money and allowed passengers to avoid common commuting woes such as delays, unpleasant odours, and overcrowded spaces during rush hour.
A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 79% who use public transport find loud phone conversations, people sneezing or coughing, and fare hikes to be top annoyances.
Other grievances include having to stand throughout the journey, individuals playing music loudly on their phones, and encountering stained seats.
Emma Isaac, from Virgin Money, which is adding ‘extra to ordinary’ this spring, stated: “We all know how brilliant it can be to get an unexpected treat on an otherwise very ordinary day.
“We thought the classic double decker was due a refresh and an elevated, extraordinary experience seemed like the best way to go to help brighten up people’s days and boost their moods.”
According to OnePoll data, half of all respondents wish buses had first-class areas – and 45% have never travelled in any form of first-class transport.
The research suggests that people would like to see more luxurious seating, pleasant interiors and a welcome drink included in a first-class area of a bus.
The ideal commute would include no traffic, free onboard Wi-Fi, and better air conditioning or heating. Beautiful views and complimentary high-end food and drinks were also among the top desires.
Emma added: “We’ve all experienced sitting next to someone who’s eating something that’s a little pungent or being on packed transport at rush hour. Hopefully, those that took the bus thought their journey was anything but ordinary for all the right reasons.”
