Donald Trump has refused to rule out 25% tariffs on the UK during a meeting with Keir Starmer but insisted relations are in a “warm spot”.
But the US President said he will press ahead with reciprocal tariffs against the EU.
He said: “The EU was very tough on us from the standpoint of trade.”
Referring to the UK, he said: “We’re talking about a very different place. A place where I have investments.”
Mr Trump also praised Brexit as “the right thing at the time” and will prove to be so “over the centuries”.
He made the comments to reporters in the Oval Office during a meeting with Sir Keir.
It came after US President took revenge on the bloc after saying it was formed in order to “screw the United States”.
Mr Trump’s hammerblow came after Sir Keir Starmer suggested being outside the EU could benefit Britain in its relationship with the Trump administration.
Asked by the Daily Express if Brexit is his “trump card”, Sir Keir said Britain would continue to act as a “bridge” between the US and Europe.
