Water on your windows may not seem like a big deal but the glass constantly being wet can lead to bigger issues in the future, but it can easily be fixed with just one item in your kitchen.

During the winter moisture tends to build up inside homes since people are doing their laundry indoors, and when this moist air comes into contact with a cold surface it creates condensation.

Condensation on windows can encourage mould and dampness to make their way inside, which can cause health issues, especially for those with asthma.

It can also lead to major house damage as the spread of condensation will cause wood to rot, damage plaster and mould will seep into wallpaper which can be tricky to remove.

However, instead of having to spend every morning cleaning your windows the experts at Horizon Windows have shared you can stop condensation with washing up liquid.

They said: “A tiny amount of washing-up liquid rubbed onto your windows with a dry cloth can work wonders at preventing condensation. It creates a barrier that helps repel water droplets.”

It may seem strange, but washing up liquid will into a thin film on windows that acts as a protective barrier that stops condensation from attaching itself to the glass.

Condensation can only stay on windows as the water droplets cling together on the glass, but washing up liquid stops the moisture from building up as it reduces the surface tension.

This causes the water droplets to spread out onto a film layer on windows so it has not chance to build up and will then evaporate extremely quickly.

You only need a tiny amount of washing-up liquid for this to work so it will not smudge your windows, and this cleaning hack can also be used on car windows as well.

How to stop condensation from forming on windows

All you need to do is add one squirt of washing-up liquid to a soft microfibre cloth.

Gently run the cloth on the window until it is a thin layer, and use the cloth to gently buff the glass to work the washing-up liquid into the glass without smudging it.

This method can stop condensation forming on windows for up to two weeks but may need to be applied more often depending on the humidity levels in your home.

Kitchens and bathrooms are more likely to suffer from condensation due to how steamy these rooms are but anywhere you are drying laundry is likely to be very humid as well.

The best way to stop condensation completely is to improve the ventilation in your home so there is more airflow, so make sure to open a window during the day if it is not too cold.

Make sure you have a consistent temperature in your home that is not changing constantly as only cold surfaces will attract moisture and cause condensation.

The expert said: “To prevent condensation on windows, it’s important to maintain a temperature between 18°C to 21°C (64°F to 70°F). This range helps maintain comfort while minimizing condensation risk.”
