Two-second avocado tip will show if it’s off

With their creamy texture and rich flavour, avocados are a versatile superfood that can elevate everything from salads to smoothies.

Whether smashed on toast or used to make guacamole, avocados are packed with healthy fats, vitamins and minerals, making them not only delicious but nutritious as well.

However, getting the timing just right is key as avocados need to be perfectly ripe to reach their full flavour.

An avocado that is too hard can be disappointing and difficult to eat, while being overripe leads to brown or bruised flesh and a distinctly mushy consistency.

One TikTok hack is helping Brits discover just how ripe their avocado is without even having to break the skin or squeeze it in the supermarket.

A TikTok account called MummyLifeSquad has shared a video suggesting that you don’t have to cut or even squeeze your avocado to see if it is good to go.

They explain that you can get an indication of an avocado’s ripeness by pinching off the cap (the small stem at the top).

The TikTok content creator said: “If it’s white then it’s rotten.” She then cut the avocado in half to show the inside of the avocado, which was rotten.

If the cap is difficult to remove or exposes brown or blackened flesh underneath, the avocado is probably overripe and very likely about to go brown and mushy.

If the cap comes off easily and reveals bright green flesh underneath, the avocado is likely ripe.

While many of her followers were intrigued by the idea, some already employ this method to see what’s inside their avocados.

One delighted follower said: “Wow! I didn’t know that and I just used one, and guess what, it was all right – thanks!”

While another added a warning, saying: “This is 100 percent correct but it also lets air in which makes them go bad fast.”

Overall, most followers agreed that while this method can help, it’s still important to check the overall feel and colour of the fruit to be certain.
