Keep washing machine clean with 50p liquid — use ‘once a month’

The cleanliness of your clothes is directly proportional to the cleanliness of your washing machine, hence the need for effective cleaning products.

If not properly cleaned, washing machine drums can become a breeding ground for mould, mildew and harmful bacteria that can cause skin irritation or even illness.

Moreover, accumulated dirt in your machine can lead to permanent damage.

Much like a blocked artery, detergent residue build-up can obstruct water flow, leading to motor function damage or seal wear.

However, you don’t need to spend a fortune on expensive products to keep your washing machine pristine.

According to homeware supply company Amica, vinegar is the secret to maintaining a clean washer.

Due to its acidity, vinegar excels at breaking down material deposits like soap scum without causing surface damage, making it an ideal solution for eliminating washing machine debris.

More importantly, it’s potent enough to kill bacteria, doubling as a useful household disinfectant.

“Once a month, run a hot cycle with a cup of vinegar in the empty drum of your machine. This will give it a thorough clean and help stop soap scum from building up,” advised Amica on their website.

If the seal is particularly damp after the cycle, it’s recommended to wipe it down with a dry cloth.

While washing on a cooler cycle is more eco-friendly, occasionally running a warmer wash is advised to ensure thorough eradication of germs.

Vinegar can be useful for more than just running wash cycles. The company also suggests using a solution of vinegar and water to regularly clean the door seal, which tends to accumulate dampness and bacteria.

Another handy tip is to remove your detergent drawer so that you can soak it in a vinegar solution and then dry it. This prevents any detergent or soap build up, extending your machine’s lifespan.

For those on a budget, a litre of distilled vinegar can be found at Asda for just £1.09, which should last several washes.

Other affordable options include Sarson’s Distilled Malt Vinegar for £1.60 at Sainsbury’s, or five litres of Golden Swan White Vinegar can be ordered for £5.95 on Amazon.
