Drivers have been warned that they could face a £3,000 repair bill as the country continues to experience wintry conditions.
According to some experts, failure to protect the car’s exterior could lead to repair bills running into thousands of pounds, which isn’t covered by typical car insurance policies.
Research indicates that salt used on UK roads to combat icy conditions can significantly damage car paintwork, suspension, and brake components. This occurs through oxidation, which leads to rusting, pitting, and corrosion if vehicles are not cleaned regularly.
Experts at One Sure Insurance said: “Winter road salts are highly corrosive, and if left on your car’s surface, they can cause long-term damage to your car.
“Ignoring this can lead to expensive repairs, with repainting and bodywork fixes easily costing upwards of £3,000 depending on the extent of the damage.”
Drivers have also been advised to wash their vehicles regularly, once a week during winter, even if it’s not visibly dirty.
The experts added: “It’s important to wash your car thoroughly, ensuring that all salt and debris are removed, particularly from hard-to-reach areas like the wheel arches and undercarriage.”
Apart from this, drivers have been urged to apply a protective layer of wax or sealant that can act as a barrier between their car’s paint and the corrosive elements.
They said: “A good wax or sealant after cleaning your vehicle doesn’t just make your car shine; it creates a protective coat that repels water and prevents salt from bonding to the paint.”
Another crucial tip is to avoid large puddles of water where possible.
As roads are heavily salted, the material can pool in these areas which can lead to your vehicle being exposed further to these corrosive materials, the experts added.
They further explained: “Taking proactive steps to care for your car is vital. Maintaining your vehicle’s paint during the winter months is not just about looks; it’s about preserving the long-term value and safety of your car.”
