Experts have warned that the UK could face a serious water shortage within the next decade, as demand is predicted to surpass supply.
Public anxiety is on the rise, with seven out of ten adults expressing concern about the risk of drought either now or within the next decade.
The National Audit Office has issued a warning that conditions similar to the dry summer of 2022, which saw England experience its driest July since 1935, could become commonplace by 2060.
In the most severe climate change scenarios, river flows could decrease by up to 30% over the next 30 years. However, households are also contributing to the issue, with up to 400 litres of water wasted daily due to easily repairable leaks in plumbing and appliances.
The innovative “water-saving house” is aims to encourage Brits to adopt solutions that could help decrease the amount of water that is being wasted daily, saving up to 328 billion litres of water by 2025.
The concept for the water-saving house was developed by Michael Pawlyn, founder of Exploration Architects, in partnership with Affinity Water. The design of the house incorporates water-efficient features to help reduce water usage.
Pawlyn stated: “When thinking about the futurewhether its about water, wildlife, or citieswe need to focus on shaping a sustainable future.”
He added “As citizens, businesses, and communities, we hold the power to determine what kind of world our children will inherit.”
To create more a eco-friendly living space the house uses aerators on faucets like showerheads, taps and toilets, to help reduce water flow without losing pressure.
It also replaces older appliances, like dishwashers and washing machines, with the latest water-efficient designs. Something experts recommend households prioritise.
The design also includes a water butt which helps harvest rainwater. For those blessed with a garden, implementing rainwater harvesting is urged, with options ranging from fitting a water butt to simply leaving out a watering can to collect rainwater.
Affinity Water has also stepped up by offering homeowners their very first Smart Meter system to monitor water usage in real-time and help spot areas that are inefficient.
