If you’re after a luxury car without the eye-watering price tag then one surprising £5k model could be the one for you.
A used car personality has taken to YouTube to recommend a surprisingly luxurious model, stating it offers some of the best features and technology despite its affordability.
Jonny Brighton runs the CarsWithJB YouTube channel and often publishes videos in which he recommends pre-owned models that still offer great performance or prestige despite their age and low price.
In a recent video, Jonny discusses luxury cars that drivers can buy for less than £5,000, stating that the Skoda Superb Laurin & Klement is often forgotten but represents the brand’s origin as a luxury car producer.
He explained: “Let’s kick this video off with the Skoda Superb Laurin & Klement, which has only recently dropped into the £5,000 price range. Now, I know this is rogue, but as one of the newest cars on this list, it is probably the luxury car I’d personally go for.
“Mr Laurin and Mr Klement were the brains behind the largest car company in Austria Hungary, which ultimately became Skoda.
“In those early days, Laurin & Klement cars were among some of the most luxurious and technologically advanced on the market. Today, the Laurin & Klement denotes the most luxurious Skoda you can get into.”
Whilst Skoda is historically known to most UK drivers as a budget brand, previously making models like the Estelle and Favorit, the Superb Laurin & Klement designed to reflect the high-end cars made by the brand’s founders.
The flagship model in the Skoda range, the Superb Laurin & Klement featured standard equipment including a touchscreen with sat nav, front and rear parking sensors, leather seats and tri-zone air conditioning.
With alternatives from BMW and Audi holding more prestige, used car buyers can get behind the wheel of a used Skoda Superb Laurin & Klement for around £4,000, with low-mileage examples often priced at £10,000.
Despite many not regarding Skoda as being a luxury car brand, Jonny noted that the saloon offers a great level of standard equipment and a capable diesel engine.
He added: “This genuinely might be the best value for money luxury car on the market with its amazing use of premium materials and design throughout the interior and a couple of nice features, like a door card umbrella.
“It comes with a 2.0-litre turbo diesel that makes 138bhp, which means it will do 0-60 in 9.9 seconds. It’s not great from a ULEZ perspective, but outside of London you’re laughing.”
Later in the video, Jonny also recommended that drivers looking for a particularly cheap luxury car consider a Rover 75, with a £5,000 budget able to get a clean Connoisseur trim model.
He continued: “The Rover 75 was the staple car for British politicians in the late 90s and early 2000s before Jaguar took over as the leading brand for Prime Ministers with the XJ.
“Granted, the PM version of the more luxurious Connoisseur spec was slightly elongated and significantly more fortified than a standard 75, but this car represents an interesting time in British motoring history as more brands began to fail and the need to modernise in line with our European rivals was ever increasing.”
