King Charles has written to Donald Trump to congratulate him on his inauguration, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Monday.
It is understood that the personal message reflected the enduring special relationship between the UK and the US.
Trump has a strong affinity for the Royal Family and recently met the Prince of Wales while visiting France for the ceremonial opening of Notre-Dame.
So far, no incoming or outgoing state visit has been announced by the Palace, but the King and Queen could be invited to Washington next year to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Foreign monarchs, presidents or prime ministers are invited to visit the King on the advice and request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, with the decision down to the Government.
