The beautiful country that’s one of Europe’s poorest with its own Arc de Triomphe | Travel News | Travel

This country isn’t one which Brits often think of visiting but it’s a great affordable part of Europe to take a trip too.

Moldova is one of Europe’s poorest countries with a GDP per capita of just £2703.

The country shares its border with Romania and Ukraine, it was historically part of the USSR and faced rapid decline in its economy with severe financial problems until the downfall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

There are several factors that contributed to the decline in industrial and agricultural output including mistakes in social policy and food insecurity.

Today, the country is looking at the West and has launched a bid to join the European Union. Yet, it still remains one of Europe’s poorest countries.

Despite this, Moldova is a fascinating place for tourists to visit.

Moldova’s countryside is incredibly scenic, with buttercup-yellow monasteries and record-breaking wineries.

In the capital city of Chişinău you’ll find a blend of Paris-style boulevards with a side of Soviet history.

Moldova is a unique and different part of Europe to explore and there are plenty of things to do while you’re there including seeing some of its Parisian style features.

One place to visit is Moldova’s Triumphal Arch which will give you a taste of Paris.

In the surrounding area, you’ll find French-style boulevards lined by weeping willows and you can walk through beautiful green spaces.

You should also visit the Bendery Fortress which is a notable place for tourists to visit in the area.

One visitor on Tripadvisor said: “The fortress is part of a complex with a church, museum, hotel, and playground.

“The beauty of the fortress is unique. It is well maintained and there are many picturesque places.”

To get to Moldova, it takes just over three hours via flight and it’s just as good a location to visit off season as it is in the summer months.
