Met Office reveals picture from space showing UK areas hit by snow | Weather | News

The Met Office has revealed an incredible photo taken from space showing exactly which areas in the UK have settled snow.

The stunning image was shared on X this afternoon, with the forecaster issuing new warnings for snow and ice.

Experts describe the photo as showing speckled, lumpy cloud in the North Sea, to the north of Scotland and across Wales, Northern Ireland and southwest England.

This indicates wintry showers. Many other areas have clear skies with a covering of snow.

This is most prominant across northern Britain.

Lying snow is visible in the image beneath clear skies. This seems to include the north west of England, the borders and most of Scotland.

Wales may also have some, although it is tricky to distinguish between snow and cloud.

The Met Office has issued an ice warning active between 4pm today and 10am tomorrow for most of Wales, excluding the south coast.

Another yellow ice warning has been issued covering the east of East Anglia, including Norwich, and the east and northeast coast of England.

This carries on into Scotland and ends beneath Edinburgh.

A separate ice warning includes a large section of the north of Northern Ireland, including Londonderry/Derry and Belfast.

Aberdeen, Inverness and the rest of Northern Scotland is included in a yellow snow and ice warning, active between 12pm today and 10am tomorrow.

The ice warnings mean there will probably be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, and some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

The snow and ice warning also refers to some roads and railways affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

The Met Office added on X this afternoon: “Temperatures quickly dropping below freezing this evening with icy stretches forming under the clear skies.

“Wintry showers in some coastal regions but most inland areas turning dry and frosty.

“Clouding over in the far southwest and not quite as cold here with some rain later.”
