Nothing quite compares to seeing little flowers appear in the lawn just after a long winter is coming to an end. An early year sunny spot in the lawn that is home to many crocuses, ready to grow, flower and dieback all before the first cut of the lawn cutting season. Making them the ideal little flower for the garden lawn.

The time to get them into the lawn is now, before the end of autumn. That way they will establish their roots over winter and be ready to grow and flower in late winter into early springtime. The best spot is with all year round sunshine, so the spot in the lawn gets any available sunshine during late winter and beyond.

This means the crocus flowers will open their petals, as they do in direct sunlight. Once they stop flowering let the foliage dieback naturally before cutting the lawn that they reside in.

The two methods to planting crocuses, the first method being a spade to create a small square in the lawn, lifting the square of lawn to leave a square hole of about 5cm deep before planting in lots of crocus corms with the tips facing upwards before replacing the lid of lawn turf and lightly compressing it down using our feet.

The second method is to use a bulb dibber and make holes in the ground before planting single crocus corms into each hole, put some topsoil into each hole to ensure the crocus corm is quilted.

Whether a few crocuses as a little clump or swathes of them across the lawn both will give a lovely sight at the end of a long wintertime.

They will thankfully multiply and also give displays year after year. Once planted just let them be, they’ll do their magic without any need for support.
