TK Maxx has issued an urgent product recall over a dangerous mould toxin found in one of its coffee products. The affected products, Bialetti Perfetto Moka ground coffee, is sold in its stores across the UK and Ireland. Food safety officials warned that routine laboratory testing discovered concentrations of Ochratoxin A – a toxic chemical byproduct produced by micro-fungi.

Customers who purchased the affected items have been instructed to stop using them immediately and not to drink the brew under any circumstances. The alert covers specific 250g tins sold across both TK Maxx and Homesense branches.

Product details

The specific item affected is the 250g Bialetti Perfetto Moka Ground Coffee Flavoured with Caramel carrying the batch code LC5 BD149T and a best-before end date of May 29, 2027.

According to TK Maxx customer notices, the contaminated stock was primarily sold on high streets between July and November 2025, with a best before date of 29/05/2027.

The recall notice read: “This product is being recalled because testing identified levels of Ochratoxin A above the permitted limit.”

Ochratoxin A is a naturally occurring substance produced by certain moulds and may be harmful if consumed.

Food safety watchdogs confirmed that while single-cup consumption is unlikely to cause acute poisoning, sustained intake poses serious potential health risks to humans.

Retailers have ordered staff to immediately strip all remaining tins from sales floors and place prominent point-of-sale warnings at till counters.

Bialetti confirmed that anyone possessing the affected batch is entitled to a full refund or product replacement at any TK Maxx or Homesense store, even without proof of purchase or an original receipt.

Shoppers requiring additional technical information or product verification can also contact Bialetti customer care directly via email at product.recall@bialettigroup.com.

Anyone experiencing unusual adverse symptoms after consuming coffee from this batch is advised to contact their GP or ring NHS 111 for further guidance.
