Cats are often regarded as independent animals that can happily entertain themselves while their owners are absent. However, certain breeds are especially prone to separation anxiety and may struggle when left alone for prolonged periods.
According to Cats Protection: “In both cats and dogs, separation-related behaviours can be linked to when a particular member of the household leaves, even if other people are still around. So, even if you leave your cat with someone at home, you may still notice changes in their behaviour.”
Signs can include restlessness, incessant vocalisation, displaying unusual anxiety around sudden noises or disruptions, refusing food, hiding themselves away more often than usual, toileting outside the litter tray, destroying furniture through excessive scratching, and in more serious cases, vomiting or suffering digestive problems. Below, we have identified seven cat breeds that may be especially susceptible to distress when left to their own devices, previously reported by the Express.
