If your perfect outing means escaping London’s crowded thoroughfares for countryside tranquillity and a touch of heritage, one village merely 30 minutes from the capital offers rural rambles, nature and ancient remains – plus a welcoming pub for refreshment en route. Situated in Kent’s Darent Valley, Eynsford boasts a fascinating heritage stretching back more than a millennium.

Today, the village attracts ramblers and heritage lovers alike, with a modest population of fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. Eynsford is accessible by rail from London in only half an hour, with its station approximately a 10-minute stroll from the village heart. Upon arrival, guests can trace the River Darent as it meanders through the settlement, reports MyLondon.

Begin with a rural ramble

Rambling represents one of the village’s principal attractions. The encompassing Darent Valley features undulating countryside, agricultural land and autumn forests, offering waterside and wooded trails to discover

Alternatively, there’s Lullingstone Country Park. Its assemblage of over 300 trees encompasses oak, beech and sweet chestnut specimens, with certain examples believed to be 800 years old.

During spring and summer months, orchids and various wildflowers pepper its chalky meadowland. A visitor centre houses a café, facilities and a retail outlet.

Explore history

Within the village itself, Eynsford Castle provides an opportunity to discover medieval remains at no cost. Under the stewardship of English Heritage, it represents an uncommon early Norman fortification.

The building featured substantial perimeter walls and residential quarters within its hall, rather than the typical towering keep design.

The curtain wall dates from between 1085 and 1087. The castle subsequently suffered damage during an ownership dispute in 1312 and was abandoned thereafter, though its remaining ruins provide insight into its intriguing history.

For those wishing to journey even further into the past, Lullingstone Roman Villa stands as another notable local attraction. Established around AD 100, it evolved as successive affluent proprietors modified it according to their preferences and faith.

Guests can view mosaics, a heated bathing suite and a ‘house-church’, along with reproductions of uncommon wall paintings. It offers a chance to examine more closely how a remarkable Roman residence developed across the centuries.

Experience wildlife first-hand

For those passionate about animals, Eagle Heights Wildlife Foundation merits a visit. The facility houses a collection of approximately 100 birds of prey, plus creatures including meerkats, huskies and reptiles.

The facility provides interactive animal encounters, from meeting eagles and owls to trekking with alpacas, with all animal experiences contributing towards funding animal care at the centre.

Allow time for lunch If you’re considering making a full day of your trip with lunch included, The Plough Inn is a highly regarded gastropub featuring crackling fires and a garden beside the river. The establishment has built a strong reputation for its Sunday roasts, with guests heaping praise on the pub across the internet.

One Google reviewer said: “We had a fantastic Sunday roast at the pub and were looked after by Steph. The food was absolutely delicious – perfectly cooked meat, crispy roast potatoes, and rich, flavourful gravy. The portions were generous, and everything tasted homemade and hearty. Steph was warm, attentive, and made us feel right at home. We’ll definitely be back for another roast soon!”.

Getting there
