Food storage tips are essential when it comes to keeping fruits, veggies, and other perishables like bananas at their best.

Bananas can go from perfect to overripe in no time, turning soft and brown before you know it.

If your bananas are spoiling before they even last a couple of weeks, chances are you’re not storing them correctly.

But fear not as a food storage pro has revealed a brilliant trick that can keep your bananas from going brown and even turning black in some cases for up to 26 days.

While most banana preservation methods suggest wrapping the stem in cling film, tin foil, or damp kitchen roll, this particular technique is different.

Amy Cross, who runs the TikTok account @amycrosslegacy, is known for her advice on purchasing, cleaning, and storing common fruits and vegetables. Earlier this year she shared her unique jar method to extend the freshness of bananas.

In her approach, Amy cuts bananas into pieces, skin still on, and places them in a glass mason jar which she then stores in the fridge.

After 26 days, she showed the outcome – the banana chunks remained fresh-looking and the peel was still yellow without any browning.

During the clip, Amy explained: “These are the bananas I purchased on March 13 and I cut this into thirds and put it into a jar, so they’re 26 days old.”

She further elaborated on her experiment’s aim: “So the whole goal of putting the bananas in the jar was to see if I can get a cut banana to last 12 hours and it’s been 26 days.”

For those who prefer not to slice their bananas, it’s advised to keep them in a cool, light-shielded spot.

Bananas should ideally be kept at around 12 degrees, as they’ll ripen faster if they’re too warm.

A dimly lit room without direct sunlight is perfect. Hence, a warm kitchen isn’t the best spot for your bananas.

For those wanting to store peeled bananas, the juice trick is a must-try. Once a banana has been sliced and exposed to air, it will rapidly turn brown.

Just sprinkle some lemon juice or pineapple juice on them this works wonders, especially in fruit salads.
