There is no greater disconnect between fanbases in our town than the one between the New York baseball teams.
The Jets trail the Giants 4-1 in Super Bowls, but the fact is that in the Super Bowl era the Jets and Giants have shared more common ground — the epic dual drought of 1970-81, a similar shared dry spell in the 13 years since the last Giants Super Bowl. If a Jets fan is feeling especially low, well, lately, his Giants fan friend has the same idea of misery. And vice versa.
Hockey? Ever since the Devils run ended in the early 2000s, we’ve generally had three fanbases that feel exactly the same thing: occasional bursts of hope and excitement; lots of disappointment. It’s hard to beat a chest too loudly among hockey fans of different persuasions in this town without breaking a rib.
Hoops? Well, let’s be perfectly frank: We already knew there were a lot more Knicks fans around here than Nets fans, a chasm that’s oddly seemed to grow even wider since the Nets traded in New Jersey for Brooklyn. Is that a 70/30 breakdown? 80/20? More? All of it seems in play. And never more so than now.
