Matthew Stafford explains record-setting pick-six in Rams meltdown

Matthew Stafford had one of the defining plays of the game on Sunday Night Football — and it wasn’t a highlight.

Stafford threw a pick six caught by Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga on pass that was intended for running back Kyren Williams. Hufanga returned the interception for a 66-yard touchdown with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

The reigning MVP shed light on how the game-altering pick six unfolded.

“Hufanga did a really nice job of kinda fighting through the Y. Just left it a little bit back behind him,” Stafford said.

The Rams scored on the very next drive to retake the lead, but the six points were costly as Denver scored 30 points in the second half of the primetime matchup.

Stafford noted the offense’s resilience to the pick six, but acknowledged the unit will have to be sharper in the future.

“The pick six was a tough one. We bounced right back and went down and scored right after that to retake the lead,” Stafford said.

“So proud of our toughness there and being able to go and get that done. But don’t wanna have those things happen. Just gotta clean some things up.”

The Rams are now 1–2 to open the season and are tied for last in a competitive NFC West. It’s been a rocky start to the season for the Super Bowl favorites and the battle will only get more arduous as LA will face the Eagles and Bills in the coming weeks.
