Melatonin is a chemical compound that has grown in popularity over the last few years, with the synthetic version now available in a range of forms to help address sleep issues and put people’s minds to rest.

The sleep-inducing compound has seen a surge in popularity, now available in various forms including pills, gummies, and patches, offering a solution for those struggling to find slumber.

Yet, concerns are being voiced by Ian Budd, clinical lead and prescribing pharmacist at Chemist4U, who cautions against the long-term use of synthetic melatonin found in many sleep aids, not just those branded as melatonin-specific.

He warns that extended consumption can lead to nightmares, night sweats, and even weight gain.

Budd advises caution, stating: “Melatonin can be found in a medicine called Circadin.”

“Make sure you know what you’re getting into before you pick up your prescription, as Circadin can have some pretty unpleasant side effects such as abnormal nightmares, night sweats and weight gain.”

He further recommends that sleep aids should be considered only when other strategies fail, suggesting lifestyle adjustments like improving bedtime routines, reducing caffeine, and managing stress.

Budd emphasises the importance of consulting a doctor before using melatonin to avoid adverse effects, saying: “Sleep aids should only be used as a last resort, after first trying to make some lifestyle changes, such as improving your bedtime routine, cutting down caffeine intake and managing stress.”

“We would recommend consulting with your doctor before using melatonin as a sleep aid to avoid any unwanted side effects.”

The NHS has also issued a warning about some potential side effects of melatonin, which includes feeling drowsy or fatigued during the day, headaches, stomach pain, nausea, dizziness, irritability or restlessness, dry mouth, dry or itchy skin, pains in your arms or legs, and experiencing strange dreams or night sweats.
