The festive season is nearly over for another year, and with a wet, cold and dreary January on the horizon, you might be dreaming of a sunny escape where you can relax for a week or two.

Beginning 2025 with some winter sun is a great way to get you set up for the year ahead, and there are plenty of destinations to choose from.

And while it’s true that many European countries are slightly chillier in January, by going a little further afield, you can bask in much warmer climes where sandy beaches and crystal clear waters are aplenty.

One prime holiday spot that’s just over five hours from London has all of this and more, with plenty of beautiful beach resorts, a bustling nightlife and gorgeous scenery too.

Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt is well worth adding to your travel bucket list, especially if it’s winter sun that you’re searching for.

According to the holiday experts at On The Beach, Sharm El Sheikh is a ‘proper’ haven if you’re looking for somewhere to relax and have fun this winter.

This Egyptian resort is situated on the coastal strip along the Red Sea, and despite being able to reach it in just over five hours, the January weather couldn’t be any more different to that of the UK.

During this time, there are highs of 22C – which is actually the coldest month of the year in Egypt. However, for UK holidaymakers searching for some warmth, it’s just perfect.

This region of Egypt really has something for everyone, so it makes the perfect travel destination. From dune-filled deserts to towering mountain ranges, the natural scenery is nothing short of spectacular.

The city is also situated right on the coastline, so if you’re a fan of all things sun, sand and sea, then you’re in luck. Sharm El Sheikh boasts some of the clearest waters, and they’re perfect if you like to snorkel.

In fact, one of the real gems of the region – Ras Mohammed National Park – has been described as a ‘snorkeler’s paradise’. Here, you’ll be able to spot plenty of tropical fish swimming around, and even some sea turtles if you’re lucky.

Sharm El Sheikh really comes alive at night too, so if you’re keen to party after relaxing in the sun all day, then this is really the place to be.

The strip in the centre boasts fabulous venues like Pacha and the Hard Rock Cafe, where you can enjoy concerts, DJ sets, and much more.

Chilled-out cocktail bars are also dotted around for those who want a slightly quieter night out, with many situated right on the waterfront for extra tranquility.

And when you’re booking your Sharm El Sheikh holiday, there are plenty of resorts and hotels to choose from. And even better, they suit a range of different budgets too.

From the Sea Beach Aqua Park resort for £364pp to the slightly pricier Cleopatra Luxury Resort for £544pp, there are so many options to discover – each with their own unique features.

So if you want to treat yourself to a holiday this New Year, this Egyptian gem could be worth checking out.
