A popular Taiwanese chain is planning to remove its famous Shanghai Rice Cakes from the menu — sparking a petition and sending furious foodies into a frenzy.
About 1,700 people have already signed a new petition to bring Din Tai Fung’s beloved dish back after leaving loyal patrons “distraught” after employees of the famous eatery, which has a busy Midtown Manhattan location, told The Post that it will be slowly scrapping the fan-favorite dish in restaurants around the country throughout the rest of the year.
In NYC, patrons have until roughly the end of June to enjoy the dish before its gone forever, employees from Din Tai Fung said — but fans of the Shanghai Rice Cakes are not accepting that outcome and are demanding the famous Taiwanese hot-spot reverse course.
“This iconic dish is not just a menu item, but a source of comfort and joy for countless individuals who have cherished its flavors and cultural significance,” the petition, posted on change.org, read.
The Shanghai Rice Cakes are described on the menu as delicious “chewy rice ovalettes” that are sauteed with premium chicken, crunchy cabbage, fresh spinach, and a blend of soy sauce and house seasonings, finished with a drizzle of sesame oil to add a rich, umami flavor.
Some described feeling personal connections to the Shanghai Rice Cakes, describing how they found solace in the dish they said comforted them when times were rough.
“Personally, I have fond memories of turning to these rice cakes during some of the most challenging times, such as when my house tragically burned down,” Lila Glass, who started the petition, said.
“The solace and warmth they provided were incomparable, reminding me of the resilience and spirit needed to move forward,” Glass added.
Another patron called the news “devastating,” and signed the petition declaring “we cannot let this happen.”
“I go every year on my Birthday just for these and my family is distraught,” said another.
In other parts of the country, like many areas throughput California, have already removed the dish over a month ago, according to angry customers on Reddit.
So far, it appears there are no plans for the world-renowned Taiwanese restaurant to reverse course.
Representatives from Din Tai Fung did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Post.
